The problem identification phase of the project was very important in establishing a meaningful and relevant basis for the project sponsored by Symbol Scanners [now part of the Motorola Corp.]. Through research in the hospital and in interviewing NICU nurses, it was found that there was a sense of disorganization in the department with respect to inventory control, as the system was notably different from anywhere else in the hospital.
